Spotify Tests Voice Translation Feature for Podcasts

Spotify Technology is testing an AI-powered feature that will translate podcasts from popular podcasters like Dax Shepard and Lex Fridman to other languages, the audio-streaming company announced. This move is part of Spotify’s efforts to capitalize on generative artificial intelligence, following the success of ChatGPT, in order to attract new users and increase revenue. The translated versions, powered by Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s voice generation technology, will mimic the original speaker’s style and provide a more natural experience compared to traditional dubbing. Spotify has collaborated with other podcasters including Monica Padman, Bill Simmons, and Steven Bartlett for this feature.

The voice translations will initially be available in languages such as Spanish, French, and German for selected catalog episodes and future releases. This expansion is expected to broaden the audience of these podcasts. Spotify has been heavily investing in its podcast business in recent years, aiming to attract more advertisers through higher engagement levels offered by the format. However, this increased spending on podcasts has led to a surge in operating expenditure, outpacing revenue growth last year. Additionally, businesses have been reducing their ad spending due to rising interest rates and high inflation.
