Xiaomi Unveils Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus smartphones: Price, specifications and availability

As expected, the Chinese Tech Giants Xiaomi has officially launched the much anticipated Xiaomi Mi 5s smartphone at the launch event. The smartphone comes in an all metal uni-body design. At the same event, company also launched the Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus  smartphone which has a bigger display and features a dual-rear camera setup. Both the smartphones are powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 821 SoC. Both the Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus smartphones will go on sale from Thursday, 29 September via flash sales on JD.com and Mi.com.

The Xiaomi Mi 5s comes in two different, one with 3 GB RAM/64 GB storage priced at CNY 1,999 (approx US$ 301 or INR 20,000) and the other one with 4 GB RAM/128 GB storage priced at CNY 2,299 (approx US $355 or INR 22,900). Similarly, the Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus also comes in two different variants, one with 4 GB RAM/ 64 GB storage priced at CNY 2,299 (approx US $355 or INR 22,900), while the 6 GB RAM/ 128 GB storage priced at CNY 2,599 (approx US $391 or INR 26,000). Both smartphones will be available in Gold, Rose Gold, Silver, and White color variants.

Starting with the Xiaomi Mi 5s, the smartphone features a 5.15-inch full-HD (1080p) display with NTSC 95 percent color gamut and a brightness of 600 nits. The company claims the display bears 16 ultra-bright LED lights to help further boost brightness. The smartphone is powered by 2.15 GHz Snapdragon 821 SoC and Adreno 530 GPU. The Mi 5s comes with a single 12 mega-pixel rear camera, with Sony IMX 378 sensor and an f/2.0 aperture. The device is backed with a 3,200 mAh battery with Qualcomm’s Quick-charge 3.0.

Now, the Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus features a 5.7-inch Full-HD (1080p) display with a brightness of 550 nits, and a NTSC 94 percent color gamut. The smartphone is powered by a more powerful 2.35 GHz Snapdragon 821 SoC Adreno 530 GPU. The Mi 5s Plus features a dual-rear camera setup, with two 13 mega-pixel sensors – one for color, and the other for black and white. Both the smartphones support PDAF (phase detection auto-focus) on rear cameras, and comes with a 4 mega-pixel front-facing camera with 2-micron pixels and an f/2.0 aperture. The device is backed with a 3,800 mAh battery with Qualcomm’s Quick-charge 3.0.

Both smartphones comes with Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. While the Mi 5s came with a front facing fingerprint sensor, the Mi 5s sports fingerprint sensor on the rear. Connectivity options on board include 4G LTE connectivity, NFC, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth v4.2, and GPS/ A-GPS. Sensors on board include an accelerometer, gyroscope, proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, barometer, and magnetometer.
