I have an old but fully functional 27-inch iMac in late 2011 with a good screen and a new GPU. I also have an 11 ”2015 Macbook Air.
No, I know that I can use my 2011 as a monitor for my Macbook Air via a Thunderbolt cable.
If I were to buy a new M1 Mac Mini now, I could connect it to my 2011 iMac using the Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 1/2 adapter plus a Thunderbolt cable (I have both). If it worked, I’d probably have to set up the device by temporarily plugging it into another display. Hopefully I should only be able to run it with the Thunderbolt cable attached. Then use the keyboard shortcut to switch to target display mode.
