News: U.S. government to respond to SolarWinds hackers in weeks: senior official.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The Biden administration will respond “in weeks, not months” to the perpetrators of the SolarWinds hack, which the US tech company used as a stepping stone to compromise a number of US government agencies, a senior civil servant said on Friday .
“The third part of our actions is to respond to the perpetrators of the attack. You can expect more announcements in weeks, not months, “the officer, who refused to be named, said in a telephone briefing with reporters.
The operation, identified in December and classified by the US government as likely organized by Russia, breached SolarWinds Corp. software. and gave hackers access to thousands of companies and government agencies who were using their products.
Microsoft President Brad Smith described the attack as “the biggest and most sophisticated attack the world has ever seen”.
The senior official also noted that most of the nine federal agencies compromised in the SolarWinds hack have completed an independent review, and those who haven’t will have completed one by the end of March.
The hacking, which also injured 100 private companies, used corrupted SolarWinds code and vulnerabilities in Microsoft identity management tools.
