Theranos founder Holmes pregnant, delay sought in fraud trial

News: Theranos founder Holmes pregnant, delay sought in fraud trial.

(Reuters) – Elizabeth Holmes, charged with fraud in the spectacular rise and fall of blood testing company Theranos Inc, is pregnant and is causing prosecutors to request a delay in her trial until after her July due date on court records.

Holmes’ attorneys, once a rising star in Silicon Valley, briefed the government of the pregnancy on March 2. Holmes attorneys and prosecutors asked the judge to postpone the start of the jury selection to August 31.

“The parties have met and discussed, and both parties agree that in view of this development it is not possible to start the process as currently planned on July 13, 2021,” the file said.

Holmes and former Theranos president Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani have pleaded guilty to deceiving investors, doctors and patients by falsely claiming that Theranos can revolutionize medical laboratory testing with technology that allows a wide range of tests to be performed with a few Could allow drops of blood.

Holmes was indicted in 2018 and her federal trial in San Jose, California was originally scheduled for July 28, 2020 but has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Holmes, who founded Theranos at the age of 19, was celebrated among professional circles until it became clear that many of the claims about the company’s supposedly revolutionary blood test were false.

The company achieved a valuation of $ 9 billion based on its promise to disrupt the laboratory testing business.

Balwani’s case will be treated separately and his trial is due to begin on January 18th.

The case is US v Holmes, US District Court, Northern District of California, No. 18-cr-00258.
