Although December 8 is the next big date for Infinite players’ diaries, and despite what it says above, that won’t technically be the day on which the full game arrives. Multiplayer will be in full swing, Infinite’s campaign will launch, but its co-op campaign and Forge will not be added until 2022. In fact, according to 343’s head of creative Joseph Staten, Infinite’s co-op campaign now won’t be here until at least May 2022.
After a year and a half of delays, 343 Industries’ decision to release Halo Infinite’s multiplayer a month early was a pleasant surprise. While the whole game won’t be released until December 8, 2021, Infinite’s free-to-play multiplayer, which includes a battle pass, is now accessible. Despite criticism of the game’s battle pass development, users appear to be happy with what they’ve seen so far.
Staten explained to Eurogamer that the extension of Infinite’s first season means co-op campaign and Forge will no longer arrive in the target launch windows outlined by 343 earlier this year. Infinite’s seasons were supposed to be three months each. However, players quickly noticed season one will run until May of next year. That was the first indicator that the co-op campaign will not be available until next summer at the very earliest.
343 has taken an interesting approach to Infinite’s launch, and one other studios might want to take note of moving forward. There have been a number of examples of games launching too early recently, including Cyberpunk 2077 and Marvel’s Avengers. Had those games plumbed for a staggered launch like Infinite then they might not have received quite so much backlash. Then again, those games, Cyberpunk in particular, don’t have the luxury of being able to break up into separate sections that can launch individually.
That date has not been confirmed, nor has a new date for the eventual launch of Forge. However, in the same interview, Staten explained that the aim is for co-op campaign to launch during season two, and then Forge in season three. That’s why it’s safe to assume co-op campaign will now not be available until at least May. If Infinite sticks to the three-month plan starting with season two, that means no Forge until at least August.
