Psychonauts 2 has been in the public eye since it was announced at The Game Awards in 2015 – but it’s only now that we get accurate information about the game’s launch date. Developer Double Fine confirms that Psychonauts 2 is in a playable state and will be released sometime in 2021.
Details on Psychonauts 2 have been scarce since it was first announced, and the occasional gameplay trailer and appearance at a press conference piqued interest in the game. But now we might finally have a concrete release window.
Via Twitter, Double Fine has confirmed that Psychonauts 2 is coming out in 2021, and better yet, that the game is already playable. This likely means that most of Psychonauts 2’s development has been completed, paving the way for its later release in 2021.
And yes, Psychonauts 2 is this year and yes, I’ve mentioned this here and elsewhere for a while, but no, I can’t tell you when because someone from THE COMPANY would cause a mysterious “cactus accident” to happen to me …
But it’s real. It’s playable. It is coming.

Perhaps the standout version of Psychonauts 2 will be the optimized version of the Xbox Series X / Xbox Series S, which should allow gamers to experience the game at higher frame rates at 4K. Psychonauts 2 will also be available on the latest generation PS4 and Xbox One consoles, as well as Windows PCs, Mac and Linux.
Microsoft acquired Psychonauts 2 developer Double Fine in 2019 and made the company part of its Microsoft Game Studios collective. This means that Psychonauts 2 will also be available on Xbox Game Pass on day one of its release.
We definitely look forward to seeing Psychonauts 2 when it finally comes out in 2021. A big selling point for us is that School of Rock and Kung Fu Panda star Jack Black will be the voice of one of the main characters in Psychonauts 2, Psychonauts 2. Black previously worked with Double Fine on the 2009 metal-infused Brutal Legend in the he recorded the voice of the protagonist Eddie Riggs.
