Pixel 6A: Six years after Apple, Android is getting its own iPhone SE, but Google is late to the party

Tech Highlights:

  • This resulted in a staggering price drop and resale value for the Galaxy S21 FE, as a brand new unit can now be yours for less than €500 or €350 if you shop on eBay (Europe). That’s down from €750 at launch. And, of course, Google had to chime in, which is why today we’ll talk about a different device that’s already been announced but still unreleased, and that’s the latest mid-range phone coming straight out of Mountain View – the Google Pixel 6A.

  • For starters, some 2021 and 2022 phones have been missing for months, including the Xiaomi 12 Ultra, which is expected to be a serious contender for the best camera phone of 2022, and the OnePlus 10, which was expected to be released alongside the OnePlus 10 Pro in January but instead received OneMinus. Apart from the numerous missing phones, Samsung’s Galaxy S21 FE was delayed by roughly a half-year and launched in January 2022, a month before the Galaxy S22, putting Samsung’s flagship-killer in an odd position.

The Google Pixel 6A is shaping up to be a firm contender for the best mid-range phone of 2022. The company’s budget offering for this year brings: See, the first A-series Pixel, the Pixel 3A, was released in early May. Then Pixel 4A came out in August, just like the Pixel 5A, and now we have the Pixel 6A, which will go on sale on June 28 – practically August again. So, releasing a brand new mid-range device 2-3 months before launching its new flagship phones isn’t exactly new for Google. However, for once, I’m ready to argue that the company might want to switch things up and amend its current release schedule.

For starters, the Pixel 6A, now more than ever, looks like it belongs to the same lineup of flagship and premium flagship phones that Google launches in the fall. That’s because the Pixel 6A carries an identical design to that of the Pixel 6 and Tensor – the same flagship chip found in Google’s $900 Pixel 6 Pro. Although very compellingly priced at $450, the Pixel 6A would make most customers more confused about their purchase of a new Google phone. For one, at $450, the Pixel 6A would be only about $100 cheaper than the Pixel 6 after discounts in the US, UK, and Europe.
