The RISC-V processor StarFive JH7100, which has two CPU cores and 8 GB LPDDR4 at 100 72 mm, and a small single-board computer called the VisionFive V1 were presented at the RISC-V Summit 2021 industry convention by the company StarFive, which SiFive co-founded. For the first time on this platform, Canonical, SiFive, and StarFive provide official support for the open-source operating system Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS (“Jammy Jellyfish”). SiFive, StarFive, and Canonical are collaborating to enhance Ubuntu and Linux on the RISC-V architecture, SiFive, StarFive, and Cindy Goldberg, vice president of Silicon Alliance at Canonical, and Thomas Xu, founder and CEO of StarFive, said in a joint announcement.
The most recent version of the well-known Linux operating system Ubuntu from British distributor Canonical now formally supports processors with the RISC-V architecture created by SiFive and single-board computers built with StarFive. The open source platform now has formal endorsement from both businesses for the first time.
The first system to be officially supported, the StarFive VisionFive V1, comes in the familiar format of single board computers such as the Raspberry Pi and has the following specifications: StarFive VisionFive V1
Teaser (Image: StarFive/SiFive) According to the manufacturer, the StarFive VisionFive V1 would be especially well-suited for AI-assisted processing of camera data using the integrated Neural Network Engine for AI algorithms and the Nvidia Deep Learning Accelerator (NVDLA), as explained in context Lecture (PDF) at the 2021 RISC-V Summit.
Compatible displays and cameras can be attached to the single board computer using the 40-pin GPIO connector that is familiar to Raspberry Pi users as well as two MIPI-DSI and CSI interfaces.
On RISC-V systems from SiFive, StarFive, and Allwinner, Ubuntu Server 22.04.1 LTS in the RISC-V version, which can be obtained straight from Canonical, runs. Press release from the official provides additional details.
