New MacBook Pro is expected to be copied iPhone design

Apple’s upcoming 2021 MacBook Pro is expected to feature design elements from the iPhone 12, according to the respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Amid rumors that the MacBook Pro will undergo a major overhaul this year, speculation has begun about what design changes, if any, will be made to the new machines. In a recent notice to investors seen by MacRumors, Kuo stated:

In terms of case design, the new models break the curvy design of the upper and lower parts of existing models and use a flat-edged form factor design similar to the ‌‌iPhone 12‌‌.

The iPhone 12‌ was announced in October 2020 and features a new design with flat, angular edges. The 2018 iPad Pro was the first Apple product to feature the design that later expanded to the latest iPad Air. According to Kuo, the MacBook Pro now appears to be one of the next products to adopt the design language.

The MacBook Pro has long had flat edges, but the top and bottom of the device are slightly convex. Kuo’s statement seems to suggest that this convexity is being removed to give the MacBook Pro a flatter touch iPhone-12 like appearance. It’s not clear, however, if Apple will address how this change may make it harder to finger the edge of the device and pick it up from a surface.

Blooomberg’s Mark Gurman has downplayed Kuo’s speculation in this area, stating that the new MacBook Pros will look “similar” to the current models with only “minor design changes”. The comment is unclear whether iPhone The MacBook Pro has a 12-style design, but that’s still possible considering the device already has flat edges.

The new MacBook Pro models are expected to feature Apple silicon chips and a brighter display with higher contrast. However, Apple seems to be backing down in other areas with the return of physical function keys instead of the Touch Bar, more ports, and an SD card reader, and recharging MagSafe.

Kuo expects new 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros to arrive in the third quarter of 2021, beginning in late June. For more information on the 2021 MacBook Pro models, see our Everything We Know guide.
