Moto G8 launched: A modest upgrade for a decent phone

The Moto G Series is one of the most popular budget smartphone families on the market and generally offers everything you need and nothing you need in a relatively affordable package. We’ve seen the Moto G8 Power and Play in the past few months, but now the company has released the Moto G8 (for example, the Moto G8, instead of a new variant called Moto G8 Proper). The new phone looks more like an evolution on the Moto G7 than a major update.

For example, the old phone’s Snapdragon 632 processor and 3,000 mAh battery have been replaced by a slightly more powerful Snapdragon 665 and a stronger 4,000 mAh battery. Strangely, Motorola’s spec sheet shows that the new phone has a charge of 10W compared to 15W on the old phone. Combined with the larger battery, this means that you can expect your new phone to take much longer to charge than the G7.

This is not the only degradation we see here, as the new phone has a larger 6.4-inch LCD screen with a maximum HD + resolution compared to the Moto G7’s 6.2-inch FHD + panel. The differences in resolution are not always clear, but the fact that you have a slightly larger screen and a lower resolution means that you are more likely to notice vague text on the new phone. Fortunately, the Moto G8 has a more flexible camera experience on paper.

We have a triple rear camera setup, with a 16 MP main camera, an 8 MP ultra wide camera (119 degree field of view) and a 2 MP macro camera. Move forward and an 8MP camera in a drilled hole treats your selfishness. Other notable details include 4 GB of RAM, expandable storage of 64 GB, Android 10, a 3.5 mm port on the top of the device and a water-repellent coating.

The Moto G8 went on sale in Brazil for a recommended price of 1,299 reais (~ US $ 282), although a promotion means that you can get it for 1,143.2 reais (~ US $ 248). Motorola says it will be available in Asia, Australia, Europe and Latin America in the coming weeks. In addition, he adds that the device will be available in the UK through Amazon, Argos and John Lewis at a recommended price of £ 179 (~ $ 231).
