In week 9 the saints start with Trevor Siemian

Tech Highlights:

  • the Saints will start Trevor Siemian against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. Siemian entered in place of Winston during the team’s victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 8, completing 15 of 29 passes for 159 yards and a touchdown. Prior to signing with New Orleans, Siemian spent time with the Denver Broncos and New York Jets. He was briefly Denver’s starter in 2016 and 2017, going 13-11 while throwing 30 touchdowns and 24 interceptions.

  • After starting quarterback Jameis Winston’s season-ending injury, the New Orleans Saints will turn to the quarterback who replaced Winston last Sunday, not the one who started the season as the team’s backup quarterback after duelling with Winston throughout the preseason.

Siemian was on the active roster as Winston’s backup because Taysom Hill was out for his second consecutive game after suffering a concussion during the team’s Week 5 victory over the Washington Football Team. He returned to a full practice on Thursday for the first time since suffering the injury.

If I learned one thing from watching football yesterday, it’s that the good teams might be bad and the bad teams might be good, which is just as confusing as it sounds. I went to bed confused last night. Just when I thought the Bills looked like the best team in the AFC they went out and lost to the Jaguars. Just when I thought the 49ers might make a move in the standings, they went out and lost to Colt McCoy. Just when I was ready to name the Cowboys as the best team in the NFC, they went out and fell behind 30-0 to the Broncos.

Last season, it was Hill and not Winston who started in place of an injured Drew Brees, which led many to believe that he would be favored over Winston in the team’s preseason quarterback competition. Instead, Winston won the job and Hill retained his role as a hybrid backup quarterback and tight end/wide receiver who played a number of snaps in specific packages throughout the game.
