Reports claim that an external link to the Netflix sign-up page is now visible to iPhone and iPad users within the Netflix app. When users click the link, a notice alerts them that they are “about to leave the app” and visit an outside website. Additionally, it states that Apple is not involved in any transactions made on the linked page.

Instead of using a web or mobile browser to use the app, users had to first sign up for the service on the Netflix website. This was done in accordance with Apple’s policies, which restricted developers from providing a link to an external sign-up page and made it impossible for apps to avoid an up to 30% fee on in-app sales. According to the study, the configuration confused new customers who could have thought they could register for Netflix using the app.
