Facebook dark mode now available for Desktop users

Finally, Facebook allows desktop users to choose dark mode. Facebook told TechCrunch that “starting today, most people on Facebook will have access to the new desktop design”. This includes dark mode, which can be turned on and off via the Settings menu.

This has been in place for a long time. Facebook promised a cleaner, faster desktop interface for the first time at last spring’s F8 developer conference. A limited number of users began testing the revamped design in January.

If you are using the desktop version of Facebook, you will probably see a banner at the top of the page asking if you want to try the “New Facebook”. For now, you can still switch to “Facebook Classic” if you like, but the new design will become the standard later this year.

Other changes include centralized guides for Facebook Watch, Marketplace, Groups and Games. Even if users don’t like all aspects of the redesigned interface, dark mode is likely to be popular. It is now available on several Facebook apps, including Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp. In addition, during the coronavirus pandemic, users are more likely to look at the screen, which can help reduce eye fatigue.
