“Consumer PC demand is on pace to decline 13.1 percent in 2022 and will plummet much faster than business PC demand, which is expected to decline 7.2 percent year over year.” Why Will Worldwide PC Shipments Fall 9.5 Percent? Gartner expects total PC shipments to decline 9.5 percent in 2022, which would be the steepest decline of all device segments this year.
According to recent data from Gartner, fewer PCs, tablets, and phones are being sold around the world this year. A “perfect storm” of problems, according to IT research firm Gartner, is reducing the number of PCs, tablets, and mobile phone shipments globally, with a nearly 10% yearly decline in PC shipments expected in 2022. According to Ranjit Atwal, senior director analyst at Gartner, “a perfect storm of geopolitical upheaval, high inflation, currency fluctuations, and supply chain disruptions have lowered business and consumer demand for devices across the world and is set to impact the PC market the hardest in 2022.”
Global PC shipments are projected to reach 310 million in 2022, down from 342 million in 2021. This PC segment includes desk-based, notebooks, ultramobile premium and Chromebooks. The 9.5 percent decline in PC shipments this year is due to price increases, unavailability of products due to the lockdowns in China because of the COVID-19 pandemic and Russian’s invasion of Ukraine, according to Gartner.
Last year, the 342 million PCs shipped represented an 11 percent annual growth increase year over year. The spike in PC shipments in 2021 was mainly due to the COVID-19 pandemic creating the new remote workforce, many of whom needed new or improved PCs, according to Gartner. Worldwide Tablet, Phone Shipments Are Dropping. In addition to a worldwide decline in PC shipments, other popular devices such as tablets and mobile phone shipments are dropping as well in 2022.
From a global perspective, the largest drop is coming from the EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa) region which is forecast to record a 14 percent decline in 2022 due to lack of consumer PC demand.
Gartner said global tablet shipments are expected to fall 9 percent annually in 2022. Tablets include all iOS and Android devices. Tablet shipments are on pace to reach 142 million in 2022, down from 156 million shipments in 2021. Approximately 1.46 billion mobile phones are expected to be shipped in 2022, down 7.1 percent compared to the 1.57 billion phones shipped in 2021.
