Because why not, Android Automotive Cars get CarPlay support

Tech Highlights:

  • It’s therefore pretty clear that CarPlay is slowly but surely becoming an integral part of the driving experience, and as it turns out, Polestar knows this very well. The company announced this week that the latest over-the-air update for the Polestar 2 is bringing CarPlay support to its EVs, therefore making it possible for drivers to connect their iPhones and get a car-optimized experience on the large display in the cabin.

  • Modern cars are now required to include CarPlay, and according to Apple, many American purchasers won’t even consider purchasing a new car that doesn’t have these features. There are five Polestars: Polestar 2, Polestar 3, Polestar 4, and Polestar 5. There are four Polestars: Polestar 2, Polestar 3, Polestar 4, and Polestar 5. At this year’s WWDC, the iPhone manufacturer announced that no fewer than 79 percent of new-car buyers in the U.S. want CarPlay, and that if the car they are considering doesn’t have it, they are prepared to walk away from the deal.

Of course, a carmaker bringing CarPlay to its new models isn’t necessarily surprising, but in the case of Polestar, this announcement is as unexpected as possible. Polestar is one of the companies that spearheaded the adoption of Android Automotive, a fully-featured Android-based operating system built by Google specifically for cars. As compared to Android Auto and CarPlay, which require a smartphone to project the UI to the display in the cabin, Android Automotive is pre-loaded with the vehicle from the factory.

Furthermore, Android Automotive comes with deeper integration in the car, so it can access functions like the seat settings and the climate controls. However, it’s very clear that Polestar wants to provide its drivers with more choices, so if Android Automotive isn’t necessarily everybody’s cup of tea, the support for CarPlay is there waiting for an iPhone to be plugged in. The new Polestar update can be installed over the air, but the company says that anyone can just go to the closest dealership to have it deployed by the staff.
