YouTube’s new feature makes repeating videos easy than ever before

YouTube has introduced a new feature that makes it easier than ever to watch videos repeatedly. It is especially useful for music and other audio, such as nature sounds and ASMR, which you can use to help you focus, mask background noise and sleep better. You can already browse videos on YouTube, but the option was so hidden that people often use third-party applications and browser extensions to achieve the same goal.

When using YouTube on the desktop, the repeat option is visible when you right-click to open a context menu on the player along with ‘Copy video URL’, ‘Copy debug info’ and ‘Statistics for nerds’. Most of these options are a very interesting niche and are of interest to only a few users; therefore, YouTube designers are working to make things more accessible, and the fruits of their work are being released as we speak.

Now, the “Loop” option is the first in the menu and not the third, and each tool in the list is accompanied by a pure icon to show what it is doing. Right-click on the video, select “Loop” and playback will automatically restart as soon as it is finished.

If you are using a mobile device, it is not easy to repeat YouTube videos, but there are some workarounds. One option is to visit YouTube in your web browser, use the browser menu to request the desktop site and follow the instructions above (keep a finger on the player to display the menu instead of right-clicking).

You can also repeat a video by adding it to a playlist. Open the video in the YouTube app, touch the “Add to playlist” icon at the top (the plus sign in a square) and create a new playlist. Give an appropriate name and tap “Save”.

Touch the “Library” icon in the bottom left corner and scroll down to find your new playlist. Tap once to open the list, then tap the big Play button on the right. Tap on the playlist name below the player window and you’ll see buttons for looping or scrolling the playlist. Since the playlist contains only one video, it repeats itself indefinitely.

It works, but it is a rather inelegant solution. So we hope that the app will soon follow the example of the desktop player with an easy way to repeat videos with just a few taps.
